‘Hetq’ reports (2011/02/03) about the archaeological excavations that have been taking place in the recently ruined Armenian church of St. George of Mughni in Tbilissi. After years of neglect, the 16-17th century church partially collapsed in 2009. The Georgian government has promised to reconstruct the church to its original condition, but has so far only spent money on excavating its foundations in order to find an older, ‘original’, Georgian church. While the findings have proven that an older structure exists, no conclusions have been drawn as to what cultural group they might belong to. The Georgian archaeological team has stopped its work due to lack of finances. Reconstruction of the church will not commence until the excavations have been fully completed.
