Hetq.am reports about the current state of one of Armenia’s most unique natural reserves – Ijevan’s ‘dendropark’ in the Aghstev river valley. Founded in 1962 as an experimental ‘labaratory’ for biologists and horticulturalists, dendropark eventually grew to become Armenia’s largest botanical garden with over 626 species of trees and plants brought from across the world. Many of the rare trees in the park are currently listed as being on the verge of extinction. Yet, this enormous enterprise has only 7 employees who receive minimal wages and can not cope with the huge task of caring after the park. According to the report, ‘dendropark’ can potentially become one of the primary drawcards for the impoverished Northern-Armenian region, but very little effort has been made by recent governments to sustain and develop this exceptional environment for either scientific or touristic purposes.
