Buniatyan’s investment in the post-colonial, modernist period of Yerevan’s architecture can not be underestimated. Among all the major architects working in Armenia during the 1920s and 30s, Bunaiatyan was perhaps the most classically committed, yet he was a tireless experimentor who successfully developed an influential form of residential and public architecture that began to typify Yerevan until the 1960s. His ideas, based on a rigorously filtered classicism drawn from Italian and Russian and later, early medieval Armenian architecture, were successful in finding a neutral ground between the opposing forces of Armenian neo-classicism led by Alexander Tamanian and the more radically innovative and modernist positioning taken by Karo Halabian, Gevorg Kotchar and Mikael Mazmanian.
