The clean, geometric lines of this house, built in 2008, are clearly inspired by the German Bauhaus movement. But the purist tendencies of Mies van der Roche and Le Corbusier’s modernism have been replaced by a playful yet neutral take on formalism. The house is spacious and comfortable without being orthodox in planning. Cleverly, the architects have not made the main building a domaninant within the general plan, but have balanced it very carefully with the surrounding yard and the garden, thus giving the entire project a more organic feel, unlike practically all the other surrounding structures which tend either towards pomposity or maximum visibility. Thanks to liberal use of glass, the movement between the interior and outdoor spaces is also fluid and unhindered – almost an anomaly in contemporary Armenian architecture. Additionally, the forms of the building slightly echo the irregularity of the hilly landscape, thus blending more successfully into the overall panorama. The interior is no less interesting with its minimalist colour schemes of whites, greys and cool reds. The atmosphere gains an unexpected note of warmth from the addition of the timber floor laid out in dark brown wood.
Altogether an exceptional example of progressive architecture in Armenia which is entirely devoid of any ‘ethnographic’ or historicist tendencies that have plagued post-Soviet Armenian architecture. Justly, this project was awarded a state prize for archievement in architecture in 2009.
