During the industrialisation of Gyumri, known since 1924 as Leninakan, numerous large-scale trade and service buildings were constructed around the historic centre. This particular building, the initial function of which is unknown to us, is clearly influenced by constructivist aesthetics. From the Soviet-period signage it is clear that the structure used to serve as a meet market. Unfortunately the immediate area surrounding the building, which has successfully withstood the devastating 1988 earthquake, is completely blocked by makeshifts booths that from a sprawling, central bazar in the vicinity of the main square. By 2006 the building remained in disuse.
